But no matter how often greasy hair strikes, it’s annoying to deal with. Fortunately, there are a few ways that you can combat greasy hair without actually washing your hair. We reached out to a celebrity hairstylist to find out what she recommends when faced with oily strands and no time to shower.
Quick fixes for greasy hair
If you’re a chronic greasy hair sufferer, you’re probably already aware of dry shampoo and its magic ability to absorb oil. According to New York celebrity hair stylist Netty Jordan, it’s best to shake the bottle of dry shampoo before applying it, so too much powder isn’t released into the air. You should then spray it on your roots, letting it sit for ten minutes before brushing it through your hair with a boar bristle brush to evenly distribute the oils.
“My secret go-to is to finish the hair with a dry texture spray. Just like a dry shampoo, this spray will absorb while giving some volume and texture to greasy, lifeless hair,” Jordan explained to HelloGiggles.

If the level of oil in your hair is beyond dry shampoo, it might be better just to work with you’ve got. Pulling your locks back into a tight up-do will make your slick hair look less unkempt and more intentional. Or opt for a simple and quick style like a high bun or a soft braided ponytail.

Be wary of washing your hair too often
There’s a lot of debate about how often people should wash their hair. Some swear by washing it every day while others have hopped on the no-shampoo bandwagon. However, most experts agree that washing your hair too frequently can actually cause the opposite of the intended effect, stripping your hair of moisture and causing your scalp to compensate by producing even more oil.
Use sulfate-free shampoo
Celebrity hairstylist Netty Jordan recommends switching to a sulfate-free shampoo.”The sulfates are the detergent compounds in the shampoo that create the foam and cleansing action. They help loosen the grease and sebum from the hair and scalp, but, at the same time, can over-dry the hair and strip it from its good natural oils,” said Jordan to . “Try using a lightweight sulfate-free conditioning shampoo like label.m Therapy Rejuvenating Shampoo. It will restore and replenish the hair without overly drying the scalp causing it to produce extra unwanted oils,” she added.
When using a sulfate-free shampoo, you may have to put more effort into massaging the shampoo into your hair, but it will likely be worth it in the long-run for healthier, less greasy hair.
Condition only the ends of your hair
If your hair is prone to greasiness, you may want to selectively apply conditioner to the bottom of your hair, skipping the roots since they already get weighed down and moisturized by your hair’s natural oils.
